Manitowoc 3900 Crane Kit Reservations Required
UPDATE - I've had a great response to this and it's going to be a bigger project than I expected so the reservation period is being extended until the end of March.
A run of these Manitowoc 3900 60 to 100 ton crane kits will be made by May 2008. For those of you who wish to get a crane at that time please send in your reservation with payment information. Download the pdf of the promo and order form at the bottom of the page.
We will not charge your credit card until the kit is shipped. If you'd like to pay with a check please send a $20.00 deposit. I do not know if another run will ever be done so this may be your only chance.
The era of this model is from the mid 1950s until today. This machine has the 20 foot long crawlers, the newer 3900 and the 3950 had 24 foot crawlers but there are plenty of these 3900 models working all over the world. Should you wish to backdate the model you can square the corners of the windows. This crane has the same look as the cranes Manitowoc made during the war years. They were called 'SpeedCrane' back then and until the early 50s (these decals will be included as well)
The house on all the Manitowocs from the 50s on up look about the same until the more modern machines of the last 15 years and the large rigs (4500 and 4600). It is difficult to tell the difference from a distance but here's a few spotting features. The 4100 has a front cab window that is reverse slope as did a few late models of the 3900 and 3950. The crawler base is a little larger on the heavier machines but the general shape of the house is the same. The machinery in the 4100 was a big change in that it had the boom hoist in the rear. You'll notice that the others you'll see the cables from the equalizer come down to the front of the machine
Now that I've said this about the boom hoist the 3900T truck crane is re-routed so it does not come directly down to the boom hoist drums that are over the two main hoist drums. The house on the 3900 crawler and truck mount are the same with the exception the roof of the truck crane house is lowered in the center so the gantry (back hitch) will fold into it and reduce the overall travel height.
For those who have an interest in the truck crane I just got the dimensions for the carrier and I'm thinking about offering that as an option. I've got the 14.00-20 tires and the house could be modified in the milling machine. I'll wait to see what response I get.
Kit No. 95280 crawler crane with 100 feet of boom $105.00 Kit No. 95281 house and carbody for flat car load $50.00 Kit No. 95288 parts for the pile driver $25.00 (boiler, tanks, etc.) Kit No. 95289 parts for the clam bucket $20.00 (bucket and tag winder) Shipping $7.00 Deduct $20.0 for not supplying the boom Add $20.00 for every extra 40 feet of boom The kit is made of urethane, brass, and styrene. The house, counterweight, carbody, sideframes, hoist drums and radiator shutters are urethane. The boom is the 75012 kit that's been available for years. This boom represents well the "No. 4" boom used for long reaches when pouring concrete and setting steel. Material handling duty cycle work (clam and drag) also go well with this boom Everything is included to build the crane as shown in the photos. Decals, rigging, and complete instructions are in the box. The instructions that come with the kit will be copied in black and white but the colored photos will be available on this web site. The color shows so much more detail.
Some ideas for displaying on our layout: Loading and unloading at a pier Maintenance work at industrial plants Buildings under construction projects Unloading pulpwood at a paper plant On a barge to do dredging or salvage work Flat car load Lowbed trailer load
