Building an Older Style Gooseneck Trailer

Building an Older Style Gooseneck Trailer

Here’s how I started one of the older style gooseneck trailers. This style was available as an option through the 1950s but the flat design made much more sense.
I wish the white styrene would show up better in these photographs. Obviously the assembly can’t be painted until it is nearly completed, one of the benefits of styrene is the ease gluing one part to another.

Building a Lowbed Trailer from Scratch

I start with one of two urethane castings I have made molds for. One is for an eight foot wide trailer, the other for a 10 foot. The surface on the top side represents the wood decking.

I cut this casting to length and then machine two slots in each end. I glue styrene beams into these slots. From now on most everything is styrene to styrene. Later a 0.015” piece will be glued over the slots representing the top flange of the two main beams of the trailer frame.

An Easy Way to Mount Fuel Tanks

An Easy Way to Mount Fuel Tanks

1. After the metal castings are sanded smooth (remove the parting line) a scrap piece of wood is super glued into the cavity on the back of the tank. It can then be held by tweezers for painting.
2. When the paint has cured cut the wood off with wire cutters , 3. Smooth the wood down flush with the back of the tank, and then 4. super glue a piece of styrene on the back, either 0.015” or 0.020” will work.
5. Glue a piece of styrene onto the side of the frame where the tank will be mounted
